Face-Neck Rejuvenation

The term facelift is often misunderstood. Actually, it refers to rejuvenation procedures that primarily redrape the lax and hanging skin of the neck and adjacent lower facial regions. With age, the skin and underlying soft tissues of the face and neck lose their resilience and tone. This laxity results in gravitational sagging. The cheeks droop, facial creases develop, natural face grooves deepen, prominent sagging jowls develop and the soft tissues of the neck hang. The neck may develop a fullness under the chin, excess hanging skin and noticeable vertical bands. These undesirable changes can be substantially reduced with techniques performed to address these physical findings. Procedures range from conservative to more definitive depending on individual corrective needs. Redraping of the neck and face restores the contour of neck, jawline and lower to mid face. These redraping procedures offer a more youthful appearance. Depending on skill, experience and personal philosophy, each surgeon will tailor procedures to suit the needs and correct the unwanted physical findings of each person. The primary goal of rhytidoplasty is the creation of a pleasant, more youthful look with nice natural contours. It is most important that the surgeon take every measure to avoid the conspicuous signs of a facelift such as a taut or too tightly pulled face, a windswept look, or a face that is just out of sync with the other facial features. A sophisticated surgeon will also preserve normal hairlines and make all incision lines as inconspicuous as possible.

The best results are those that create no distortions. In both women and men, the primary goal of an expert surgeon in performing all rejuvenating procedures is to develop contours that produce a youthful quality. Eyebrow Lift

Extraordinarily low eyebrows tend to obscure the upper eyelids and possibly a portion of the eyes as well. A variety of procedures are available to elevate the brows to a more desirable position. The most appropriate people for brow-raising procedures are those individuals who possess very low brows and who are not suitable candidates for measures that directly address and correct the upper eyelids (blepharoplasty).

Laser Facial Skin Resurfacing

Facial skin surface irregularities including wrinkles, environmental/sun damage, degenerative changes from smoking, some pigmentary discolorations, and certain scars from acne or trauma are often best treated with skin resurfacing techniques. For many years, dermabrasion (mechanical sanding) and deep chemical peels have been employed as modalities to improve these conditions. For the past decade, the laser has been used as the primary tool in treating these facial skin defects, especially the wrinkles and environmental surface damage. There are many lasers available to treat a variety of skin abnormalities; however, the CO2 laser is the gold standard for resurfacing. This laser remains the most effective laser to make rough, wrinkled skin smoother.

Combined Procedures

The primary goal of our practice is to maximize patient satisfaction. Accordingly, it is frequently desirable to have two or more procedures performed. These procedures may be staged at different times; however, they are most often performed at the same time. The advantages of safely combining procedures at one sitting include: greater appearance enhancement much sooner, less anxiety, significantly reduced overall downtime, cost savings, greater satisfaction with results. Commonly combined procedures performed together include: nose contouring (rhinoplasty) and chin enhancement (mentoplasty), upper and lower eyelid rejuvenation (blepharoplasty) along with face/neck rejuvenation (facelift or rhytidoplasty). Forehead-eyebrow lifts, liporedraping, facial skin laser resurfacing, facial implants and soft tissue fillers may also be performed concomitantly with other procedures. Any and all of the procedures mentioned may by performed at the same time. The selection and combination of these procedures vary, determined by physical needs and desire to improve appearance. To obtain optimum results in making people look their best, appropriate procedures are customized to suit each person.

On occasion, it may be appropriate and desirable to perform extreme makeovers, However, most people would prefer to retain their physical identity and appear their best in a natural, youthful, pleasant manner. In our practice, we strive to fulfill patient expectations.

Otoplasty
  (Ear Reshaping)

Protruding ears make many people feel somewhat self-conscious. Otoplasty is a procedure available to create a more socially acceptable natural appearing ear. The deformities, mostly manifested by undue prominence or protrusion, are corrected by reshaping the ears. The object of the otoplasty is to reform the ear structure by creating more normal curves and contours with the ear often set back closer to the head. The main goal of otoplasty is to make the ear appear relatively more "normal" and less conspicuous to self and to others.

Adjunctive Procedures

There are a multitude of cosmetic modalities available to enhance appearance. For purposes of brevity, only a few of the more common procedures are presented in this Website. In addition to the items discussed, there are many procedures that have been developed to address most cosmetic concerns. These include liposuction and liporedraping procedures that remove prominent subcutaneous fat deposits to provide a smoother soft tissue contour. Also, there are numerous filler substances currently being used, by insertion or injection, to correct skin and soft tissue defects. They soften facial depressions, reduce the depth of grooves and furrows, and treat deep wrinkles and skin creases. In addition, injectable BOTOX® has become a wonderful treatment for forehead lines caused by muscle contraction, such as the furrows between the eyebrows. Another modality available and receiving popular acceptance is the use of high intensity light sources and lasers that are used for long term reduction of unwanted hair in certain individuals. The best candidates for laser hair removal have dark hair and a fair complexion.

Skin Care

Proper therapeutic skin care measures and maintenance are important to the vitality, health and appearance of the skin. Systemic hydration, frequent application of topical moisturizers, proper dietary measures, nutritional supplements, use of sun screens, avoidance of smoking are all basic elements of good care. In addition to these basics, our many years experience with superficial skin resurfacing has convinced us that the best treatment of the surface skin is the employment of a good glycolic acid peel program. Our program, consisting of periodic ongoing superficial skin peels combined with home maintenance, is a superb regime to treat and correct the fine etchings, coarse quality and dull complexion of the skin. Candy Langan, R.N., developed the Academy System that we believe is the most effective program available. It has many advantages over other modalities including microdermabrasion and the new so-called noninvasive lasers.
